Property description The area has numerous caves with much older archaeological remains that indicate a continuous use of this space since prehistoric times -documented since the Early Bronze Age (around 2200 BC)- that could be qualified as a sacred place of worship. On the other hand, some surveys carried out inside the castle have found remains that indicate a Roman and Byzantine occupation.
It is believed that the enclosure was already used as a refuge for the existing population in the area during the Islamic invasion (903), and that it was later used again during the Christian reconquest of Mallorca by James I in 1229. It is from this moment on that we have more information about Santueri Castle, which passed into the hands of Nuño Sans, Count of Roussillon, until his death in 1241, being inherited by his nephew James I, King of Mallorca.
In 1248, during the conquest of Mallorca by the King of Aragon Alfonso III, the resistance of the castle was scarce, surrendering after a few days of siege. From this date until the middle of the 14th century it was in operation due to the continuous clashes for the ownership of the Kingdom of Mallorca. Later it became a place of vigilance against possible maritime attacks.
At the end of the 15th century it practically fell into disuse, although it was a point of resistance in the Germanic movement, facing sieges between 1522 and 1524, being the only one of the three rock castles of Mallorca that remained loyal to the Crown.
After this period, the castle remained more or less active in the face of possible threats from the sea, but its degradation and loss of importance increased. In 1811 it was sold by the State to a private owner and completely abandoned its function as a fortress.
During the years 2010-2011, the property carried out a major intervention in the Santueri Castle, the largest it has undergone since the sixteenth century, consisting of the most urgent consolidation actions. In addition, and as a necessary extension, new consolidation and restoration interventions were carried out. All of them, with a totally private investment of around 400,000 €, were carried out under the direction of the multidisciplinary team of the Castle (an architect, a technical architect, an archaeologist, two restorers, and an art historian), coordinated by the architect D. Rafael Balaguer Prunés, and with the continuous supervision and approval of the technicians of Historical Heritage of the Council of Mallorca.
